Open Document Format for Office Applications is a ZIP compressed XML based file format. It is used in charts, spreadsheets and presentations. The other name of this format is OpenDocument. The main aim to develop this is to provide an open XML-based file format. This standard was developed in the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standard by the technical committee.
It was based on Sun Microsystems which was originally developed for Star Office. The main aim was to offer an open standard for the official document. The OpenDocument format consists of an XML document which has its root element. It can also take the format of a ZIP compressed archive which consists of many files and directories.
There can be a separation of various concerns like style, content and metadata. The format of OpenDocument is used in the free software. It also includes individual applications like presentation, spreadsheet and word processor.
OpenDocument files are compatible with OpenOffice and LibreOffice like open source applications. Additionally, it is also compatible with Word. The Word Document (.docx) is compatible with most of the applications.
